Model of the Pangolin Pavilion, September 2021
The Pangolin Pavilion, sculpture and outdoor projection space for the Eco Showboat expedition, is a pop up shelter made from repurposed beach parasols. This extraordinary work of engineering is designed to be erected rapidly, resist wind, provide shelter, channel rainwater, provide good acoustics and a comfortable setting for small group workshops.

The pavilion will be powered by a Goal Zero Yeti 3000x Portable Powerstation, charged by the Mayfly’s solar/eolian array supplimented by a portable solar array on the shore.
Composed of 25/30 striped parasols, connected together loosely, and securely tied down to the ground with guy ropes, each time it is assembled it takes a different form, responding to the site and to the weather. Constructing the pavilion as a team develops STE(A)M skills including: engineering and design; physics forces and counter forces; teamwork; artistic skills such as aesthetic consideration and decision making; and creates opportunities for conversations about sustainability, repurposing and recycling, rainwater harvesting etc.
